JULY 2008

D E A R  F R I E N D S ,

It is with great pleasure that we send you our first Newsletter. Thank-you for your wonderful support during our April concerts. It is, of course, you, our audience that makes it all worth while. We are very excited about our August programme which we are currently rehearsing and want to encourage you to bring a friend to share our music making and to help bring money to the charities which Trio Anima Mundi supports.

HURLSTONEPiano Trio in G major Op. posth.

Trio Anima Mundi’s second concert in their 2008 concert series is an exciting exploration of three composers hailed as child prodigies but who then died at a tragically young age. Two of the composers, Schubert and Hurlstone, share the grave epitaph—”Here lies rich treasure but still fairer hopes” -which titles the concert.

The centrepiece is Schubert’s magnificent B-flat Piano Trio. An exquisitely beautiful and timeless work, it lies alongside the first Australian performance of William Hurlstone’s passionate Piano Trio in G major. Hurlstone (1876—1906) was considered “the most significant musical figure of his generation” and his trio continues Trio Anima Mundi’s journey through English music from the late Romantic period which we are featuring in each of the 2008 concerts.

The programme also includes Mozart’s little known duos for violin and cello which abound in the charm and elegance so quintessential of this most loved of child composers. Mozart composed these duos at the tender age of only 12 years.

Once again the proceeds of these concerts will be used to support a charity. In Geelong, money raised will go to a Water and Sanitation project in Papua New Guinea. Melbourne’s concert will support “Activate”, an organization which seeks to change the course of the lives of disadvantaged youth in the suburbs of Melbourne and so help prevent homelessness, substance abuse and criminality.

The opening of Trio Anima Mundi’s 2008 concert series in three concerts across April was received with excitement and warmth. Melbourne critic for The Age, Clive O’Connell, spoke of the “..voluminous riches of the keyboard…” and “...the sumptuous string duets that surge(d) out with heartfelt magniloquence…” . The box office also brought pleasing results with $2,432.50 being donated to charities Trio Anima Mundi supports.
