NEWSLETTER 3
DECEMBER 2008

Dear Friends,

We have come to the end of the first year of Trio Anima Mundi’s life. Thank you for your support and for sharing the rich musical journey we have been on. Next year we have new territory to explore as we cross the channel from England to France. Our preliminary rehearsals are revealing that just as English music from the turn of the century had much to astonish us with, so too in France we are discovering music of great beauty that has been largely ignored.

A major change for Trio Anima Mundi in 2009 is the departure of our violinist, Rebecca Chan. Rebecca is going to focus on her String Quartet - the Hamer Quartet - and plans to spend extended periods of time in Sydney where her teacher resides. Despite this sad loss Trio Anima Mundi will be welcoming a wonderful new violinist, Rochelle Bryson, about whom you can read later in this newsletter.

PROGRAMMES FOR 2009

Next year, in each of our three concerts, Trio Anima Mundi will feature a composer who won the Prix de Rome. The Prix de Rome was the highest award given to students of the French Academy of Fine Arts. Instituted in 1666 by the Arts Minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, it allowed students to spend four years in Rome. For over two centuries it was considered the highest accolade a French artist could win.

Of the three french composers the Trio will feature, Claude Debussy is the best known, however his Piano Trio was written when he was only 18 and remained unpublished in his life-time. The other two composers, Theodore Dubois and Max D’Ollone are little known but, like the English Romantics featured in this year’s TAM concert series, they are sure to delight and surprise our audiences. The Dubois is elegant, melodic and full of beauty. The Piano Trio in E minor of Max D’Ollone is perhaps the biggest surprise; rich and expressionist it is also vivacious despite it gorgeous and thick harmonic structures. Alongside these french delicacies Trio Anima Mundi will play a satisfying selection of Piano Trios written by well-loved composers including Schumann, Mendelssohn, Haydn and Beethoven.

RECORDING TAM

Next year Trio Anima Mundi hopes to be able to record some of the music we have been bringing to our audiences. We are currently sourcing funding to enable this project and the new year will see us able to provide tax deductibility for contributors to our projects. This will be made possible through Abaf (Australian Business Arts Foundation), a government organization which allows small arts organizations like ours to attract donations which can have tax-deductible status. We would be delighted to hear from any interested audience members.
