                       2010  SUBSCRIPTION  SERIES

Trio Anima Mundi’s 2010 concert series will take its audiences on a musical journey through the Nordic countries of Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Bringing music from a world of darkness, light, snow, ice and fire, each of the three programmes in the 2010 series will present a work by a luminary composer of Nordic ancestry. The three composers featured are Dag Wirén from Sweden, Niels Gade from Denmark and Jean Sibelius from Finland. Born in 1817, the music of Niels Gade reflects the moods of the early romantic composers, Mendelssohn and Schumann. A true nationalist, Sibelius turned to the dramatic landscapes of his homeland for inspiration while Dag Wirén’s works were influenced by the early twentieth century neo-classicists.

Concert 1

The first concert for 2010 follows on from Trio Anima Mundi’s 2009 “Prix de Rome” series, with each composer featured in this program having a direct connection to France. Gabriel Faure and Theodore Dubois (whose first piano trio was performed in Trio Anima Mundi’s 2009 series) were both French nationals. The Swedish composer Dag Wirén wrote his piano trio whilst living in Paris and the Argentinean Astor Piazzolla also spent time studying in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, whose influence proved a turning point in his compositional career.

Beethoven’s magnificent “Ghost” trio forms the centrepiece of the second concert in Trio Anima Mundi’s 2010 subscription series.. Whilst all three composers featured wrote major symphonic works, it is in the immediacy of the piano trio that Trio Anima Mundi will be exploring their more intimate compositions.

Music in the Round Monash University 2009

Trio Anima Mundi’s final concert for 2010 presents a program of works by nationalist composers. The piano trios of Sibelius, Copland and Smetana capture the essence of their respective homelands with music inspired by rhythms, harmonies and melodies based on folk songs and folklore. This concert will also feature the premiere performance of the winning work of Trio Anima Mundi’s 2010 Composition Prize.
